
This award is presented to Members of APEGGA who have served their profession diligently for many years and made substantial contributions to the operation of the Association and the advancement of its professional status.
Dr. Om Malik, P.Eng., has provided exemplary service to the profession over the past 36 years through his work with APEGGA, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (formerly the Institute of Electrical Engineers). In 1965 he received his PhD in electrical engineering from the University of London, U.K., following a Master’s degree in electrical engineering from University of Rorkee, India in 1962 and a national diploma in electrical engineering from Delhi Polytechnic in 1952.
Dr. Malik has worked within the areas of optimal, digital and adaptive control for 25 years. This work has led to the development of new techniques for control of power systems. In addition, his research interests extend to digital protection of power systems, fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks.
Having given 35 years of service to the University of Calgary, he is currently Professor Emeritus in the Schulich School of Engineering’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He has also worked in administration at the faculty and department levels and has been a Professor and Associate Dean of Student Affairs. Dr. Malik has published 306 papers in reputed international journals such as IEEE’s Transactions. In addition, he has presented more than 298 papers at various international and national conferences, and authored seven book chapters, including two in Encyclopedias of Electrical Engineering, and 54 other publications.
For his contributions to the profession, Dr. Malik has received numerous awards from IEEE, the Engineering Institute of Canada and the University of Calgary. He also received APEGGA’s inaugural Alberta Ingenuity Fund Research Excellence Summit Award®. In addition to his extensive involvement within the engineering community, Dr. Malik has been active with several non-technical and community organizations including the Bill Howard Foundation, the Calgary Boys’ Choir, the University of Calgary Emeritus Association, the University of Calgary Senate and the Calgary Indo-Canadian Centre Association.

This award is named for Mr. Lionel C. Charlesworth, P.Eng., APEGGA President,
1924. Mr. Charlesworth was appointed Deputy Minister of Alberta Public Works
in 1915 and also served as Deputy Minister of Railways and Telephones until 1921.
Until his retirement in 1945, he devoted his life to the highly important work
of irrigation in southern Alberta and was instrumental in establishing the Eastern
District in 1935.
