Let the Games Begin

An engineer heading to Beijing doesn’t usually sound like breaking news to APEGGA members. This engineer though, will have the eyes of an entire nation on him while he’s in China.

Paul Tichelaar, E.I.T., is one of Team Canada’s Olympic athletes competing in the games beginning in August. The Edmonton engineer is one of three men’s triathlon athletes representing Canada. His race is slated to go on Aug. 19.

APEGGA members will be able to follow Paul’s progress to and at the Olympic Games through a new feature we’re adding to the website. Where in the World, a new blog feature, will appear on the front of the APEGGA website beginning in late July. This feature will allow members to share their unique experiences with their colleagues through a blog. Featured blogs will be allowed to upload photos and video and will also provide space for viewer comments as well.

Paul has agreed to be our first feature blogger. His experiences will be featured until September. Log on to our website, look for Where in the World, and take in a first person account of experiences at the Olympic Games from one of your own.

From all of us at APEGGA, we wish Paul the very best in Beijing.

Where in the World Are You

APEGGA is kicking off the launch of its new blog feature with an account of experiences from the Beijing Olympic Games. But the adventure doesn’t end with the games.

Beginning in September we will be allowing a selected member of APEGGA to be featured on our new blog feature on the homepage of the website. Where in the World is meant to showcase interesting projects or experiences our members are involved with in some of the most far flung places on the planet.

So we want to hear from you! Are you heading to Africa to help create better lives through engineering? Are you one of the professionals working on the new bridge in Dubai? Are you carving out caves in South America? Maybe you’re digging for diamonds in the southern United States or the Northwest Territories. Wherever it is, we want to share your stories with all your colleagues.

Interested? Please e-mail Francine Maxwell, fmaxwell@apegga.org and tell us a little about your adventure. We’re looking for first person accounts of experiences had from around the world. Each selection will be featured for a pre-determined amount of time, depending on the length of the adventure.

We can’t wait to share Where in the World you are and what you’re doing.

Continuing Series: What’s In It For Me?
APEGGA Outreach Program

The APEGGA Outreach Program was established to promote careers in engineering, geology and geophysics and to raise public awareness of the professions. This is accomplished through a variety of programs offered to K-12 Alberta schools. The outreach program also provides recognition programs that identify exceptional science and math teachers, who have gone above and beyond in making math and science fun to learn. The program also provides support to province-wide science and math events and assists in the development of math and science curriculum.
