The City of Edmonton’s Strategic Vision calls for a more compact, livable and sustainable city, where people have an opportunity and choose to use alternative transportation modes. Expanding the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system is one of the ways the City is planning to meet these objectives. The supporting strategic plans (The Way We Move, The Way We Grow, The Way We Live and the Way We Green) contain further policy statements in support of expanding the LRT network.

Over the past year the City of Edmonton has taken considerable steps in achieving this vision by developing an LRT Network plan detailing how LRT infrastructure needs to expand to meet the City’s needs over the next 100 years. This has been complimented with various levels of planning and design for routes to serve the Northwest, Northeast, East, Southeast, South, and West regions of the City. Continued development of this system helps to promote LRT as the preferred choice for people to move around the City helping achieve the goals identified in the Strategic Vision.
