The Calgary section of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering has announced its national award winners. Dr. Walter Dilger, P.Eng., will receive the A.B. Sanderson Award for outstanding contributions to the development and practice of structural engineering in Canada; Dr. John Morrall, P.Eng., will receive the Sanford Fleming Award for outstanding contributions to the development and practice of transportation engineering in Canada; and Dr. Tom Brown, P.Eng., will receive the P.L. Pratley Medal for co-authoring the best paper on bridge engineering. APEGGA Canadian Council of Professional Engineers Director Darrel Danyluk, P.Eng., a life member and former president of APEGGA, is among four Calgary members recently made CSCE fellows. Recognizes Volunteer Work
A Medicine Hat APEGGA member with a strong background in
branch volunteering has been recognized provincially for volunteer
work that extends beyond the Association. James Hogg, P.Eng.,
a former chair of the APEGGA Medicine Hat Branch, is among
six Albertans added to the province's Volunteer Wall of Fame
on Dec. 5, which was International Volunteer Day. Each inductee
receives a Stars of the Millennium Volunteer Award. ARC Names APEGGA Member
An Alberta Research Council Inc. employee of more than two
decades has accepted a new position with a new ARC unit. Rod
Ridley, P.Eng., is manager of the new sensors engineering
business unit. Mr. Ridley has been with ARC since 1979, after
earning his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering
from the University of Alberta. Engineer Manages Edmonton Office URS Corporation, a major environmental engineering and remedial construction firm, has announced the appointment of Douglas Smith, P.Eng., as manager of its Edmonton office. Mr. Smith brings to the job 29 years of diverse management and engineering expertise in railway infrastructure, environmental site assessment, environmental impact assessments, environmental compliance audits and remediation projects. URS Corporation says its clients will profit from Mr. Smith's superior time management, cost control, budget control, and interpersonal and communication skills. SAIT Opens Training Centre The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary officially opened North America's first training centre for the electrical power industry, Dec. 10. TransAlta and others in the industry opened phase one of the TransAlta epiCentre, which will focus on training workers for the electrical power industry and providing continuing education for industry professionals. It will also be a demonstration site for industry to showcase new technology in emerging alternative energy sources.
Big news in the renewable energy front broke in October, with the announcement that Enmax Corp. and Vision Quest Wind Electric are joining forces to develop a southern Alberta wind farm. Bob Nicolay, president and CEO of Enmax, and Fred Gallagher, P.Geol., chief executive of Vision Quest, hope their $100-million deal results in Canada's largest producer of wind power. The wind farm will begin operating in late 2003.
