Engineering Students Hit 2007 Stride

The University of Alberta Engineering Students’ Society is back in action in the winter 2007 semester. With the end of the year came the end of another term, and some of the best events the ESS has ever held.

FANCY FOOD
Creations of all kinds — such as the one above — are part of the upcoming CAN-demonium food drive at the U of A.

New year’s resolutions are already waning but the Engineering Students’ Society is not. We are back and better then ever with an amazing lineup of events for undergraduate engineering students.

Past Events
The Engineering Career Fair took place Jan. 19. More than 40 companies showcased themselves to prospective employees, the students at the U of A.

This was a great occasion for all our students to see the amazing opportunities open to them for summer or long-term employment. It went over well and we are excited to continue the partnerships we forged with the companies.

The first week back for winter semester, Jan. 13-20, marked the largest event of the ESS, Geer Week. It was filled with competition and friendly rivalry between disciplines. In the end the electrical engineering students were declared the champions of Geer Week. I am quite happy about being an EE myself — but isn’t everyone a winner in the end?

The discipline clubs have kept up with the ESS offering students specific events to mix and mingle within their own discipline. The Biomedical Students’ Mix and Mingle events brought together students to discuss the future of this growing stream.

Sixteen engineering students represented the University of Alberta at the Western Engineering Competition in Vancouver, Jan. 24-28. This was a great opportunity for the winners of the U of A Engineering Competition to pit their skills against other Western Canadian schools.

We are still awaiting results to see if the U of A will be represented at next month’s Canadian Engineering Competition.

Upcoming Events
February is a wonderfully exciting and busy time for students, mainly because of midterms and Reading Week. There are a number of events taking place over Reading Week, Feb. 19 to 23.

Feb. 20 to March 3 is National Engineering & Geoscience Week. This week will feature a number of events for students to display their skills, such as speech competition, and an event where discipline clubs band together to succeed, such as the CAN-demonium food drive.

March 12 to 16 is the ESS Pi Throw, which has students and faculty buying pies “delivered” to friends or colleagues — who may well be pied in the face. This is a fun and exciting fundraiser for the ESS, and it’s sure to raise a good amount of support and camaraderie, which are both needed as finals approach.

On behalf the entire Engineering Students’ Society, thank you so much for the continued interest in the ESS at the University of Alberta.
