APEGGA permit holders were among the companies, individuals and other groups recognized June 7 in Calgary with prestigious Emerald Awards for their contributions to the environment. The Alberta Emerald Foundation for Environmental Excellence recognized winners in 12 categories, in the 14th annual presentations.
Shell Canada Ltd., along with its environmental specialist Roger Creasey, received the Corporate Leadership Award for enhancing the integration of environmental issues with resources development. The Research and Innovation Award went to Syncrude Canada Ltd. for instrumented watersheds for reclamation research.
Two municipal permit holders were also awarded. The City of Calgary won the Climate Change Award for its ROADS EnviroSmart Streetlights Residential Retrofit Project. The Town of Canmore won the Government Institutions Award for its sustainability initiatives.
The Alberta Emerald Foundation for Environmental Excellence was founded in 1991 by McLennan Ross LLP, the Government of Alberta and Deloitte & Touche, to recognize the outstanding initiative and leadership Albertans were demonstrating in the face of environmental challenges. The foundation created the Emerald Awards to celebrate these achievements, and has encouraged all Alberta individuals, organizations and corporations to participate during the past 14 years.
Each year the foundation receives about 100 nominations from Albertans. An independent panel of judges reviews the nominations and selects finalists and award recipients.
