√ Science Camps Abound For Kids
Not sure what to do with your kids this summer? Perhaps a science camp is just the thing to broaden their experiences.

APEGGA sponsors science camps through the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary. These camps also have outreach programs for other areas of Alberta.

Discover E science camps at the U of A feature activities for children ages six to 18. New this year is an environmental engineering camp for ages 12-15. This program will see campers on a field trip to the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment plant to learn how to better keep the environment and drinking water safe and clean. Discover E will also be going out to Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, Fort MacKay and Fort Chipewyan with science programs. Other programs include robotics camp, scientific discovery camp for younger children,  introduction to engineering for older ones and virtual discovery computer camp.

The director of Discover E, Leslie Predy, says that with all the outreach programs about 1,100 kids are entertained and educated with science and engineering every year.

Minds in Motion, the U of C’s summer science program, has programs running from May to August for kids Grade 3 all the way through 10. Here they’ll be introduced to programs in chemistry, biology, physics, computers, programming and engineering. Minds in Motion will also be travelling this summer to communities such as Morley and Caroline, as well as the Sioux Tsuut’ina First Nations and Siksika First Nations.

Luke Laffin, director of Minds in Motion, expects about 750 children to be wowed by science this summer.

Both programs have spaces still available in a wide variety of topics.

√ 2006 CSPG CSEG CWLS Annual Convention
The Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists, the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists and the Canadian Well Logging Society held their annual convention in Calgary May 15-17. This year’s theme, What’s next? Where is our industry heading?, showcased technical talks, social events and exhibitors from across the country. APEGGA had over 200 delegates stopping by at the corporate booth for everything from registration questions to comments on the latest PEGG.

APEGGA was proud to once again support the convention’s efforts by sponsoring the webcast session. This year’s topics included: advances in seismic data acquisition; earthquake seismology; recent advances and future challenges in geopressure prediction; integration of geological and geophysical data; and challenges in seismic reservoir characterization and monitoring.
