APEGGA Shows Well at ASTech Awards

APEGGA permit holders and one member were among those who took home prizes rewarding the heights of science and technology, after a black tie gala at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Calgary, Oct. 14.

The 16th annual ASTech Awards saw the Alberta Research Council along with Highland Feeders Limited win the Outstanding Achievement in Applied Technology and Innovation Award. Their combined project transforms manure into green power, organic fertilizers and reusable water — while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

NovAtel Inc. was rewarded with the Outstanding Commercial Achievement in Alberta Science and Tech-nology Award. This award goes to a firm with gross sales of over $25 million per year. NovAtel Inc. is the Calgary-based world leader in the global positioning system industry.

Taking home the Syncrude/ ASTech Innovation in Oil Sands Research Prize was Rodney Ridley, P.Eng., of the Alberta Research Council and Patrick Dougan of Syncrude Canada Ltd. The development of innovative process measurement systems for oil sands extraction is what secured these two the prize.

The Leaders of Tomorrow Award went to Ryan Schneider, E.I.T., for his work in developing the technology that accelerates computer simulations and assists others in the research of everything from building washing machines to developing new cancer diagnostic tools. Mr. Schneider is the chief technology officer of Calgary’s Acceleware Inc.
