Former APEGGA president John (Jack) Browning, P.Geol., FEC, loved music and told a good travel or engineering story. He passed away peacefully on Nov. 14 at his home in Calgary, with his family and his beloved dog, Reggie, at his bedside. He was 92.
“The geological profession in Alberta has lost one of its giants,” Dr. Gordon Williams, P.Geol., APEGGA Past-President, told The PEGG.
Mr. Browning was born in Saskatoon. He earned his bachelor of arts degree in geology in 1939 from the University of Saskatchewan, and an honorary LLB in 1990 from the
University of Calgary.
From 1943 to 1945, Mr. Browning served as a member of the Royal Canadian Artillery and Royal Canadian Air Force.
A longtime member of APEGGA, Mr. Browning was first elected to Council in 1976 and served as President in 1983. His involvement with the Association also included serving on various regulatory and advisory committees.
In 1984 he was granted an honorary life membership in the Association. He received the L.C. Charlesworth Professional Service Summit Award in 1994 for his service to APEGGA. Then in 2009, Mr. Browning was named a fellow of Engineers Canada.
Mr. Browning has served as president and vice-chair of Canadian operations and major world projects for Tenneco. He was president of Prodeco Oil & Gas Company and a consultant to a number of international projects for public companies and the World Bank. Prior to his retirement, he was president of J.M. Browning Consultants Ltd.
His was a member of the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists, a director of the board of governors of the Canadian Petroleum Association, a life member of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and a founding member of the Oil Scouts.
Mr. Browning was predeceased by his wife, Danny, and is survived by his children, his grandchildren and his great grandchildren. A memorial service was held Nov. 27 in Calgary. Donations may be made to the Salvation Army or Operation Eyesight Universal.
