Geering Up For Another Year

October 2010

It’s that time of year again, the leaves are falling and winter looms over the horizon. September finds engineering students at the University of Alberta busy having fun before they start to feel the stresses of weekly homework assignments and midterm exams.

The U of A’s Engineering Students’ Society (ESS), discipline clubs, and the Faculty all held their own unique events to welcome students back to school and get the academic year started with a bang, making the month memorable.

GEER 101, run by the ESS, was the first major event of the year. The goal is to welcome first year engineering students to the U of A with a wide variety of daily events during the first week of classes in September. This year’s GEER 101 coordinators were APEGGA student members Alex Nilson and Nicole Stodola, who planned several new activities in addition to traditional favourites.

Some of the new events were a rock band tournament and a photo scavenger hunt. According to Ms. Stodola, these two activities were probably the best attended ones of the entire week. Classic activities included free coffee and donuts for first year students, also a design competition.

This year’s competition was especially spectacular, as the students had to build trebuchets –a type of catapult that works by using the energy of a raised counterweight to throw the projectile – to launch Styrofoam balls along the corridors of the Engineering Teaching and Learning Centre (ETLC).

The first year students showed great skills, proving they have a bright future in engineering. When pitted against the trebuchet, created by Mr. Nilson and Ms. Stodola, both third year students, the first years’ trebuchet launched the balls further and proved to be the winning design. Competition winners were awarded the ever-popular “Engineering Ruined My Life” t-shirts and all participants received U of A Engineering bandanas.

Other First Week Events

The fourth annual Engineering Physics Undergraduate Research Symposium took place on the afternoon of September 10. The purpose of the Symposium is to allow undergraduate students in engineering physics, electrical engineering, or physics to present their summer research projects to peers and faculty members.

Each ten minute presentation was followed by a brief question period. Seven students, - six from engineering physics and one from physics, gave talks on a wide range of topics from low temperature physics, to high energy laser experiments, to micro-scale waveguides.

Before the presentations, Dr. Raymond DeCorby, P.Eng., from the Electrical and Computer Engineering department gave an introductory talk. He spoke about a career in research and how he became a professor at the U of A.

Overall, the Symposium was successful in highlighting the achievements of engineering students and well attended by students and faculty.

Engineering Expo

The faculty showcased the talents of its students and alumni at the inaugural Engineering Expo held on September 25. Welcoming its alumni back to the U of A for Homecoming, whist inviting prospective students to the campus to see what the Faculty of Engineering had to offer was a huge success.

Current students gave lab tours and talked to potential students about the different engineering departments. The Expo was an excellent way for the faculty to underline its accomplishments and the achievements of its students, current and former, and show the entire community what engineering at the U of A is all about.

Now the month is over and fun events are slowly dwindling, students are looking forward to the excitement of the University of Alberta Engineering Competition, just a few weeks away.

SCAVENGERS ON THE HUNT
