What the mountains of Kimberly, B.C., lacked in snowfall was made up for tenfold in sunshine, camaraderie and memorable moments.  The turnout to the P.S. Warren Ski/Snowboard trip at the end of February was fantastic.

The trip was spearheaded by Kyle Laird, an APEGGA student member and P.S. Warren’s vice-president, external. The Backside Tours event saw about 50 society members hit the slopes for a weekend of fun.

After an exhausting and eventful bus ride from Edmonton on Friday night, the crew rose early Saturday and hit the slopes. A refuelling session on Saturday evening in the form pizza and nachos, courtesy of Backside Tours, was capped off by night of skiing and the long-awaited condo costume party. The costumes ran the gamut from mullet-sporting hillbillies to a wandering Rubik's Cube.

Sunday afternoon involved a last-ditch effort to pack in all of the skiing and snowboarding possible – before settling down to ice our aching legs and cheer on our Canadian men’s hockey team on its way to winning Olympic gold.

GEOS ON THE SLOPES
The group are ready to tackle the slopes of Kimberly. Later they relax and hold an impromptu jam session at the condo party.

APEGGA Ring Ceremony

March 1 was a day of preparation for all geology and Earth science students attending the upcoming APEGGA ring ceremony. Tom Sneddon, P.Geol., Manager, Geoscience Affairs, for APEGGA, presented the geo-ethics lecture in Edmonton.

This lecture informed attendees of the standards that they, as future members of APEGGA, will be held to and what it means to be a practicing professional. Students were able to gain an understanding of the benefits of becoming a licensed APEGGA member, as well as the responsibility associated with their designations.

The message of accountability and integrity resonated with the audience as we discussed various situation and scenarios, along with the implications of unsound decision making.

St. Patrick’s Day saw the P.S. Warren Society social conveners plan a great event for members.

They teamed up with our good friends at Molson Canadian to put on the second annual St. Patty’s Day Shaker at the Billiard Club on Whyte Avenue. The night brought together good food, great laughs and the always outstanding  green draft.

Graduation Events

Society members traded in their rock hammers for burger flippers one last time, for their final grad fundraising barbeque outside the Engineering Teaching Learning Complex, on the University of Alberta campus, March 11 and 12.

About 150 people attended the grad itself, including students, friends and family. This year’s event was held at a local hotel on March 27. The night comprised dinner, speeches, a slide show and awards.

Special thanks to P.S. Warren grad chairs, and APEGGA student members Hannah Mills and Brant Skibsted, for their tremendous effort in organizing not only grad, but the countless fundraisers required to ensure the evening was a success.
