√On Feb. 9 APEGGA hosted Practicing the Professions at the University of Calgary. The event attracted 25 students, which helps them make the transition from student to working professional. Penny Colton, P.Geoph., APEGGA Manager of Geoscience Affairs, backgrounded the students on APEGGA and how to register with the Association. APEGGA Coun. Darcie Greggs, P.Geol., spoke on professionalism in geoscience.

√Changes aplenty are taking place in the Communications Department. Edmonton Public Relations Coordinator Tara Madden is on a one-year maternity leave. Filling in is Kirsten Milner. Kirsten is available at kmilner@apegga.org.
And we are sorry to say goodbye to Calgary Public Relations Coordinator Heather Frantz, who leaves to pursue other opportunities. We have recruited a replacement for Heather, and her name is Althea Adams. Reach her at aadams@apegga.org.
Speaking of appointments, APEGGA staffer Lindsay Holden has become our graphic production designer. She will assist with implementing our brand strategy, laying out The PEGG and other graphics-related tasks.

√A number of members were featured in articles published on Feb. 24
in both the Calgary Herald and Edmonton Journal in an insert celebrating National
Engineering & Geoscience Week. Names many of you will recognize in the articles
are Daniel Bagheri, P.Eng., Simon Feng, P.Eng., Sid Fontoura, P.Eng., Ghasem
Oloumi, P.Eng., Andrew Poole, P.Eng., Ginger Rogers, P.Geol., Mehdi Shariat,
P.Eng., and Ian Squires, P.Eng. The insert also included a National Engineering & Geoscience
Week calendar of events; a kids' activities page; a listing of 10 projects that
represent 100 years of engineering and geoscience innovation in Alberta; information

√APEGGA proudly sponsors the University of Calgary's Engineering Student
Project Fund. For the 2004-2005 year, financial support went to a total of six
projects. In the Department of Mechanical Engineering, we sponsored the Society
of Automotive Engineers Heavy Lift, the SAE Mini Baja and the SAE Formula One.
In Civil, we sponsored entries in the Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race and
the Concordia Bridge Competition. A cross-departmental project, the University's
Solar Car, was also sponsored.

√APEGGA supports engineering, geology and geophysics students at the University of Alberta and University of Calgary through student liaison committees in both Calgary and Edmonton. Their primary goal is to stimulate student interest and understanding in APEGGA as their professional association.
Professional members of the committees provide students with suggestions on student-run events. Members are also active participants in the many mixers, dinners and other networking events held by the students.
The Edmonton committee has nine professional members, and six student members representing three student societies. The Calgary committee has eight professional members, one member in training, and six student members representing three student societies.

√APEGGA's General Services Department is a hub of activity each and every day, coordinating the printing, assembly and distribution of materials for every other department. Each year, General Services prepares and distributes approximately:
• 2,500 National Professional Practice Exams
• 4,200 applications for registration
• 1,500 member certificates
• 480 permit certificates
• 2,500 Ring Ceremony packages
• five issues of the Edmonton APEGGA Women's Club newsletter.

√The 17 member volunteers on the Enforcement Review Committee play a
critical role in supporting APEGGA's Compliance Department, which investigates
potential title and practice violations among non-members. Committee members
come from a variety of backgrounds, sharing their time and expertise to assist
in the more difficult cases, often performing independent reviews of companies'
or individual's activities. In 2004, the Compliance Department opened 567 cases.
ERC members were involved in resolving about 90 of these.
