Branch Guide to Event Planning
Contests

The Calgary branch of APEGGA ran two new events to help Calgary students catch the spirit of engineering.

Calgary students in grades 7-9 submitted essays exploring engineering innovations. Thirteen winners of the "Day as an Engineer" essay contest will spend a "day on the job" with local engineers, being exposed to the challenges and decisions faced by professional engineers. Winners will also receive a pass to the Calgary Science Centre, an APEGGA mousepad and puzzle, a Certificate of Achievement and a letter of congratulations from APEGGA. This event is partnered with the University of Calgary, The City of Calgary, Mentor Engineering and UtiliCorp Networks Canada. There were over 30 entries in the essay contest. All participants received a Certificate of Participation, an APEGGA puzzle and pencil, and a motivational letter from a professor of engineering at the University of Calgary.

Using the "Engineering…anything's possible!" theme, students in grades 1-6 were invited to enter a poster contest. They had to design their vision of the engineering world. Winners received passes to the Calgary Science Centre including a pizza party with professional engineers. The pizza party will be taking place on Saturday, April 27, 2002 in the Funlab at the Calgary Science Centre. At the celebratory lunch the winners will be presented with a letter of congratulations from APEGGA, a Certificate of Achievement, APEGGA pencil and bookmarks and a National Engineering Week ruler. There were 44 entries in the poster contest. All participants received a Certificate of Participation, APEGGA pencil and bookmarks and a letter of appreciation from APEGGA for their efforts.

Local celebrities, members of the scholastic community and professional members of APEGGA judged both contests. Participating schools were from public and separate schools in Calgary.
