APEGGA to Sponsor AAPG/CSPG
Joint Convention Luncheons

Calgary will host more than 6,000 delegates from around the world June 19-22 when the American Association of Petroleum Geologists and the Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists hold a joint annual convention.

APEGGA is sponsoring the awards luncheon for AAPG’s Joint Division of Environmental Geosciences — Energy Minerals Division on June 22, featuring guest speaker Jim Dinning, chairman of the Canadian Clean Power Coalition.

Mr. Dinning’s presentation, Marginal Carbon Fuels: the Key to Prosperity, addresses clean coal technology, particularly as it applies to providing energy and feedstock to Alberta ’s expanding oil sands and petrochemical industries.

Mr. Dinning, a former MLA and Alberta Government treasurer, describes the province as “the sweet spot where geology meets geography." He will present his vision for Alberta ’s future prosperity, which involves moving beyond a simple oil-and-gas economy to one that integrates less attractive or marginalized carbon fuels, such as coal, coke, asphaltenes and biomass. He will explore how Alberta will be able to meet its expanding energy needs while still meeting or exceeding by up to five times the emissions reductions required under the Kyoto Protocol.

APEGGA is also a sponsor the AAPG’s Division of Professional Affairs luncheon on Tuesday, June 21, which will feature guest speaker Kenneth Vollman, P.Eng., chairman of the National Energy Board.

APEGGA will also have a booth at the tradeshow.
