Dr. Anil K. Mehrotra, P.Eng.

 

Dr. Anil K. Mehrotra, P.Eng., has been a professor in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering in the Schulich School of Engineering (formerly Faculty of Engineering) at the University of Calgary since 1981. In 2002, he was appointed Director of the Centre for Environmental Engineering Research and Education (CEERE). Under his leadership, CEERE has become known widely for offering a multidisciplinary post-graduate program in environmental engineering to Canadian and international students.

Over the past several years, Dr. Mehrotra has served APEGGA diligently in a number of capacities.  He has been on the Executive Committee of APEGGA’s Board of Examiners for almost 10 years as an academic examiner for the disciplines of chemical engineering and environmental engineering. He takes his duties on the Board of Examiners very seriously, devoting approximately two days each month to the Board’s affairs.  He is a member of the APEGGA Nominating Committee as well.

Dr. Mehrotra is also involved with other professional organizations.  In the past four years, he has been a program visitor for three visiting teams of the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). In 2000, he represented APEGGA on a committee of the Canadian Engineering Qualifications Board (CEQB) for developing the first national examination syllabus for environmental engineering.  Additionally, he serves as a reviewer for numerous scientific, engineering and professional journals and has organized several international conferences. 

Dr. Mehrotra has also been very active in university, faculty and departmental committees at the University of Calgary. He has served as a founding member of the organizing committee for the Annual Graduate Student Research Conference of the Schulich School of Engineering, which has recognized his services with two Service Excellence Awards.  His accomplishments in other areas of his professional career have also been recognized.  He was awarded the inaugural APEGGA Excellence in Education Summit Award®. In addition, he has received APEGGA’s Voluntary Service Award and several teaching excellence awards from the Schulich School of Engineering, the Engineering Students’ Society, and the University of Calgary Students’ Union.  In 2000, he was elected a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada in recognition of his teaching, research, service and management accomplishments.

This award is named for Mr. Lionel C. Charlesworth, P.Eng., APEGGA President, 1924.  Mr. Charlesworth was appointed Deputy Minister of Alberta Public Works in 1915 and also served as Deputy Minister of Railways and Telephones until 1921.  Until his retirement in 1945, he devoted his life to the highly important work of irrigation in southern Alberta and was instrumental in establishing the Eastern District in 1935.
