APEGGA Sponsors Teacher Award

BY KIMBERLY NISHIKAZE

As a measure of its commitment to excellence in teaching, support for educators and leadership in promoting awareness of science and technology, APEGGA is sponsoring a provincial teaching award through the Alberta Excellence in Teaching Foundation.
Starting in 2001, the APEGGA Excellence in Teaching Mathematics/Sciences Award will be bestowed on an Alberta educator who has an exceptional ability to inspire students and nurture their interests in math and/or the sciences. The award is one of 21 provincial awards recognizing teaching excellence in Alberta. The recipient of the new award will receive $5,000 to use towards classroom materials. Another $5,000 will be given to the Foundation to promote and administer the delivery of the Alberta Excellence in Teaching Awards.
Teachers and school administrators adjudicate the Excellence in Teaching Awards and nominations are sought from the general public. The call for nominations for the 2001 awards was launched on Nov. 1. To nominate a teacher for the APEGGA Excellence in Teaching Mathematics/Sciences Award, visit the Alberta Learning website at www.learning.gov.ab.ca/teaching.

The new award is complementary to APEGGA's existing Teacher Awards Program, which recognizes fourteen elementary, junior high and senior high school teachers who excel in the teaching of science and math. To find out more about the APEGGA Teacher Awards program or nominate a teacher, visit the APEGGA Outreach website at www.apegga.org/science.

APEGGA joined the Alberta Excellence in Teaching Foundation on Oct. 7. Members of the Foundation include: Alberta Learning, Alberta School Boards Association, Edmonton Journal, Fraser Milner Casgrain, Syncrude Canada Ltd., TELUS, The Alberta Teachers' Association, and The Document Company, XEROX. The Awards' sponsors are the Calgary Herald and Alberta Chambers of Commerce.
