OUTSOURCING COMPANIES
PROFESSIONALLY REVIEW WORK,
INQUIRY FINDS
But New APEGGA Guidelines Are Recommended
Legally, APEGGA regulates the Alberta practice – not
the products – of
engineering. Separate Alberta legislation, such as the Safety Codes Act, may
require the involvement of a professional engineer, but not necessarily the involvement
of an engineer registered in Alberta.
That means that engineering coming into the province for
Alberta projects doesn’t always need to be reviewed by an APEGGA professional
engineer.
Some members fear that the public may be at risk, because
the reviews aren’t
happening or aren’t thorough enough.
However, that’s not the case, a Practice Review
Board inquiry has found. Outsourcing companies are, in fact, making sure outsourced
work is thoroughly and professionally reviewed at home.
Still, the inquiry recommends that APEGGA guidelines be created
to formalize the review of outsourced work.
