Provisional Licensees
Added to APEGGA Roll
The designation Provisional Licensee changes nothing
when it comes to the requirements for full professional membership. However,
APEGGA hopes the new designation will have a big impact on the job marketplace – both
for internationally educated graduates seeking relevant positions and for employers
seeking skilled labour.

Nomination Time – With a Twist or Two
Everything appears normal in the lead up to the APEGGA 2008
Election, but this one will be like none the Association has held before.
First of all, there’s a strong possibility members
will be able to vote electronically. Council will decide early next month whether
to go ahead with electronic voting in 2008, using a secure system now being tested.
The proposal so far is that each member who wants to participate the old fashioned
way will have to contact APEGGA for a hardcopy election package.
Even without electronic voting, 2008 marks a new era for
the election. For the first time ever, members will be able to vote for at least
one registered professional technologist and R.P.T.s will be casting ballots.
Full R.P.T. membership rights and the validity of electronic
voting both come out of recent changes to the Engineering, Geological and
Geophysical Professions Act.
Watch the December e-PEGG and the January 2008 hardcopy PEGG for
full details on the election. In the meantime, check out the the official Report
of the Nominating Committee, as APEGGA gears up for the election, the Annual
Conference and the Annual General Meeting.
Remember, APEGGA accepts nominations from members for Council
and President-Elect/Vice-President. These nominations, assuming they’re
valid and received in time, are added to the list approved by the committee.

Environmental Gems Needed Now
Every
year, the Emerald Foundation honours Alberta projects and people who make that
extra environmental effort. And every year, many of the nominations have strong
ties to the APEGGA professions.
Let’s keep that tradition going.
The foundation has issued its call for nominations for the
2008 Emerald Awards for Environmental Excellence. Do you set a top environmental
example? Do you know of an individual or organization that does? Share these
success stories with others.
The Alberta Emerald Awards recognize
excellence in preserving, protecting, enhancing and sustaining the environment.
That sounds a lot like what many APEGGA members do every day.
Nomination deadline is Feb. 29
at 4 p.m. Awards will be presented June 3 on the Shoctor Stage at the Citadel
Theatre in Edmonton.

So
Much Space
But so little time.
APEGGA members are invited to register for the Canadian Space
Summit 2007 – but you’d better do it now. The event takes place over
the weekend at the University of Calgary.
The annual national summit brings
together space organizations, space industry representatives and space researchers
from across Canada. An agenda packed with speakers, entertainment and workshops
promotes communication and collaboration.
Registration is available online
(see below) and APEGGA members are eligible for a discount.
This year the summit focuses on western
Canadian efforts in space exploration and engineering.
Among the speakers are
-
Dr. Pat Côté of the Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics, on the
Hubble Space Telescope
-
The U of C’s Dr.Alan Hildebrand, a professor of planetary geology, on
NEOSSAT and asteroids
-
The University of Alberta’s Dr. Susan Jacobs, a professor of physiology,
on cardiovascular health in space.
