This interactive presentation will highlight a few key areas that one should consider before approaching their employer to discuss their pay and or career development options. When an employee knows not only what they want but also what value they add and the company’s position, they are better equipped to discuss pay and career development in terms that will satisfy both the employee and the company.

  • What is the value that I bring to the company/position? From whose perspective, mine or my supervisor's?
  • What have I done to increase my value/employability?  From whose perspective, mine or my supervisor's?
  • What career development am I seeking? Why? Is my request realistic and achievable from my supervisor's perspective?
  • Who is my competition? Both pay and career development.
  • How unique are my skills?
  • Does my company support career development? Is it a core value? Is it funded?
  • Where is my company in its development? What is the financial situation of my company, division, department?
  • How difficult would it be to replace me? What will the company lose? What will I lose?
  • When is the right time to talk to my supervisor about my pay and or career options? From whose perspective, mine or my supervisor's?
  • When is the best time to approach my supervisor? How do I approach the topic?
