Consulting Companies Join Forces

Friendly Competition Puts Engineers to Work for United Way

Several Edmonton and area engineering consulting companies have come together to strengthen the communities they live and work in through a partnership with the United Way. In 2007, for the first time, employees from the supporting companies took part in a Consulting Engineering Challenge.

All the companies involved are competing for the right to be named 2007 Consulting Engineering Challenge Winner.

To kick off the challenge, employees from the following companies decided to unite and participate in a Day of Caring: Associated Engineering, Bantrel, Colt Engineering, CoSyn Technology, EBA Engineering Consultants, ISL Engineering & Land Services Ltd., Magna IV, Stantec, SNC – Lavalin Inc., UMA Engineering and Cord Worley Parsons.

On Sept 28, 54 volunteers from the engineering sector collaborated to complete an overhaul of the KARA Family Resources Centre outdoor playground in Edmonton. The project included building a fence, removing warped and damaged decking around trees, installing a play structure, removing and replacing a shed, purchasing materials for the play area, and leveling and laying sod.

KARA Family Resource Centre, one of 44 United Way member agencies, provides programs and services to parents in Edmonton through parent education, family support, early childhood development, and information and referral. Without the help of these generous volunteers from the APEGGA membership, this project would have been too ambitious for the not-for profit organization to complete.

Now families in Edmonton’s northeast communities will have an improved place to interact and play with their children, and attend learning-through-play and other programs — all with the peace of mind that their children are in a safe environment.
