A BETTER RACE CAR |
Fast times ruled at the sixth annual Capstone Honours Awards Night, April 12, with the Formula SAE Composite Chassis driving off with the Glatz Memorial Award. Each year the best of the award-winning mechanical engineering capstone projects at the University of Alberta earns the right to compete at the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineering national design competition.
This year, during a night that featured presentations of each top project before judges, the team of Matthew George, twins John and Peter Kjellbotn and Joseph Marcos took home the main prize. As well, members of each team won working gear reducer trophies, which the Capstones have become famous for.
Industry sponsors join the U of A, the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Northern Lights Chapter of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers to present the awards. The top, titanium-level sponsors — at $20,000-plus — were Alberta Economic Development, Gambit Products Ltd., Precimax Manufacturing Ltd. and Darcey Riley. At the $10,000-plus, inconel level were ProCad Engineering Ltd. and Sperry Sun Drilling Services of Canada.
In addition to the Glatz winner, the following projects were honoured.
Fire and Shock Proof Data Logger Case. Team members Patrick Chan, Elke Grimsrud, Logan Jones and Allan Ziegler.
MAG Rotary Tool for HVAC Air Flow Measurement. Adrian Audet, Andrew Gerber, Chris McCann.
Greenhouse Heating System. Micha Ben-Zvi, Candice Heron, Sheldon Pinto, Sarah Sutherland.
Junior Honours Design. Michael Corea, Christopher Hunt, Phil Ophus, Spencer Torrie.
