THE OUTSTANDING MENTOR AWARD

MR. N. TOM E. GREENWOOD-MADSEN, P.ENG.

This award recognizes exceptional achievement as a mentor.

Mr. Tom Greenwood-Madsen, P.Eng., holds a B.Sc. and an M.Eng. in electrical engineering from the University of Alberta. His professional experience spans the areas of power system planning and operations, and electric utility project management. He joined ATCO Electric in 1988, where he is currently Supervising Engineer, Transmission Development and Operations Planning. Mr. Greenwood-Madsen has been active in the APEGGA Mentoring Program since its inception in 2004. Since then he has mentored numerous people using thoroughness and care, according to testimonials from his proteges.

What distinguishes Mr. Greenwood-Madsen from other mentors is his approach. He encourages proteges to determine their own course of action for meeting goals and objectives. This empowerment is a critical feature of excellence in mentoring. Mr. Greenwood-Madsen displays patience and an understanding of the whole person when working with proteges. He is warm, approachable and consistently respectful of each protege. He promotes confidence in proteges by helping them to identify and build upon their own strengths. More than one of his proteges has reported having their confidence and self-esteem noticeably enhanced. He has also demonstrated a willingness to accept proteges on short notice as well as during times when he is actively mentoring others.

Mr. Greenwood-Madsen dedicates a considerable amount of time to the program’s recruitment and support activities including mentor and protege coaching sessions, information sessions, mentoring circles and the annual mentoring conference. In addition to assisting with planning these events, he is frequently a featured speaker. His presentations are heartfelt and target the core values and the humanity of mentoring. He has been described as a mentor’s mentor – a role model and the standard by which other mentors can be measured.

In addition to mentoring, Mr. Greenwood-Madsen's commitment to the engineering profession is demonstrated by his participation in other volunteer activities. Since 1996 he has been involved in several APEGGA committees and in the Vermilion Branch. He received an APEGGA Voluntary Service Award in 2003. He also regularly participates in Iron Ring workshops, at Life Member and New Member induction ceremonies and workshops for Internationally Educated Graduates.
