Why?
It’s all about making sure our professions are sought after by those who have the potential to improve the quality of our services and our quality of life and who can maintain the public trust that is inherent in the privilege of self-regulation that has been given to the professions by the Alberta government.
Spread Your Generosity
The APEGGA Education Foundation provides a way for you to support educational initiative throughout the province without necessarily rewarding just one institution. Many, in fact most, APEGGA members have moved to Alberta from elsewhere and find their allegiances align with Alberta moreso than where they came from. But, a contribution to a specific Alberta school may not interest them. The Foundation can be the vehicle to help you meet your goals.
Lever Your Donation
Smart investors look for ways to lever their donations.
- Tax rebates of 50% on donations over $200 provide one doubling of your investment.
- Matching funds from the Alberta Government's Access to the Future Fund provide a second doubling.
- Matching funds from employers provide a third doubling.
The net result is a whopping 8 times your personal investment.
Attract the Brightest and the Best
There is a lot of competition for the best and brightest students and engineering, geology and geophysics don’t always come to mind first, unless family or friends are in the professions. Our professions are often called the invisible professions so it takes time and money at the elementary, junior and senior high school levels to make students aware of the opportunities in our professions. The need is particularly acute with young girls. Given the current and projected skilled labour shortages it is important that the professions keep the professions fresh with new talent. APEGGA has a very well respected outreach program that is undergoing an audit to determine how it can partner with other organizations to improve upon it even further. Partnering can mean funding support for these other organizations
Support Education
Education needs are great and the Foundation wants you to know where it will be focusing in the near term. With your generosity, as its funds grow, the Foundation will consider other opportunities for involvement.
Teachers at these levels need the support and encouragement to ensure students are being exposed to the applied math and sciences in a fashion that gets the students fired up about them. Feedback from elementary and even junior high teachers suggests that many feel uncomfortable with delivering the maths and sciences because their formal education focused on the pedagogy not on the curriculum content. This need will also benefit from the recommendations coming from the outreach audit and may provide an opportunity for the Foundation.
Secondly, education is much more expensive that it used to be and we don’t want gifted students to forego the opportunities in our professions due to the lack of money. The Foundation will be enhancing its efforts in this area.
Finally, it is important to recognize students who achieve high academic standing and who may have significant achievements outside their school work. The Foundation has been counseled to refocus its efforts away from academic achievement recognition because there are so many scholarships available.
Who, When, Where, What and How?
Donations are accepted from individuals, corporations and events. Members can further support the foundation by using an AEF affinity credit card.
A portion of all purchases on your AEF Mosaik MasterCard go to the Foundation. Click on the MasterCard icon on the left to review the benefits, convert your current MasterCard (at no additional cost), or to set up a new account.
Individuals are encouraged to donate through the voluntary donation opportunity on the APEGGA Annual Dues invoice. Throughout the year, you may still access the Member Services area to donate online by clicking here.
And, of course, we still accept cheques any time of year, sent to:
APEGGA Education Foundation
1500 Scotia One, 10060 Jasper Ave
Edmonton, AB, T5J 4A2
Members are also encouraged to consider donating part of their estate through their will. We do provide advice, which should be confirmed with your lawyer, about how best to do that. It is possible to recognize your specific interests and your donation by focusing the donation (area of study and audience) and naming it/them after you.
Corporations often want more recognition for their donations because their donations are larger. The Foundation can accommodate these requests.
Events can be a fun way to generate funds. The Foundation is prepared to work with you on an event that is promoted as a fundraiser for the Foundation.
