From the Branches

Lots of Projects in Southeast

BY VIC JANZ, P.ENG.

Medicine Hat/Brooks Branch Vice Chair

Hello from the southeast. The branch was in the spotlight in September, when we hosted the Council meeting in Medicine Hat. The event went well and attendees were pleased with the arrangements.

The past year was a time for changes and improvements for Medicine Hat. The area was busy with development projects in the private and the public sectors. CanCarb, a carbon black producer, installed a cogeneration plant to produce electrical power from process waste heat. The IXL brick company announced in January 2001 that it had two kiln lines running 24 hours per day for the first time in many years.

Westco has started work on the reclamation of the former Western Cooperatives Fertilizers waste pond site. This will be a multi-year environmental project.

Looking ahead, the City of Medicine Hat intends to finish twinning the north-south corridor through the city with the addition of a second overpass at the site of the existing Allowance Avenue overpass. Additionally, the city plans an underpass at the intersection of the Trans-Canada Highway and 13th Avenue. This will be a provincial infrastructure program item.
The president's visit to the branch will be on Feb. 26 at the CFB Suffield Officer's Mess. The branch will schedule two additional technical meetings between the president's visit and the summer break. The annual golf tournament will be held in July. All members and guests are welcome to these events.

Members should watch for details in the notices
