REGISTERED PROFESSIONAL TECHNOLOGIST ENGINEERING
– R.P.T. (Eng)

As an R.P.T. (Eng) you are licensed to independently practice engineering in Alberta within a clearly defined scope of practice. Under the terms of the Engineering, Geological and Geophysical Professions Act of Alberta, it is a condition that you must be a Registered Engineering Technologist (R.E.T.) with the Alberta Society of Engineering Technologists (ASET) to be eligible to apply for R.P.T. (Eng.) status.

What criteria do I have to meet?

To become licensed as a Registered Professional Technologist (Engineering) you must:

1. Be registered as an R.E.T. with ASET and be nominated for registration as an R.P.T. (Eng.) by ASET;
2. Have at least 6 years of experience in work of an engineering nature that is acceptable to the APEGGA Board of Examiners, at least two of which are in the defined scope of practice and which were completed under the supervision and control of a Professional Member, and at least one year of your experience must be equivalent Canadian experience;
3. Be of good character and reputation;
4. Demonstrate knowledge of law, ethics and professionalism by passing the National Professional Practice Examination;
5. Meet the English Language Competency requirement.

How do I apply for my license?

To apply for your license you must submit a completed Application for Registration Form together with the required accompanying documents and application fee to ASET. ASET will review your qualifications to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for nomination for registration as an R.P.T. (Eng.)

If ASET finds you are suitably qualified for nomination as an R.P.T. (Eng.), ASET will notify APEGGA of this and APEGGA will contact you. You will then need to provide APEGGA with the appropriate application fee and documentation as APEGGA may require.

The Application for Registration Form and related explanatory materials are available online at the bottom of this page. In the alternative, a paper version of the application package may be obtained through the Calgary or Edmonton APEGGA offices or the Edmonton ASET office.
