On Tsunamis


Two renowned experts will present fascinating information on the tsunami phenomenon, Oct. 29 in Calgary - covering everything from the earthquakes that trigger tsunamis to the destruction they cause.

The Canadian Society of Petroleum Geologists Educational Trust Fund, the Canadian Society of Exploration Geophysicists and APEGGA are excited to present Earthquakes and Tidal Waves: When the Earth Moves as the 2003 Honorary Address.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Seattle. Among many accolades, he is a noted oceanographer and an expert on tsunamis.

Joining him in the annual Honorary Address will be Dr. Garry Rogers, a research scientist at the Geological Survey of Canada. Dr. Rogers is a renowned lecturer and expert on earthquakes in Western Canada.

The main address will be on Wednesday, Oct. 29, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary. Tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster, phone (403) 777-0000 or visit www.ticketmaster.ca. Prices are $12 for adults and $6 for students, and group rates are available.

In addition to the evening presentation, CSEG, CSPG and APEGGA, together with numerous corporate sponsors, are putting on an afternoon performance for 2,000-3,000 school children. Students from public and Catholic schools will be invited to attend the afternoon show, with no admission charged.

Organizers encourage additional corporate sponsors to participate in this opportunity for students to discover the exciting world of science through an extra-curricular educational field trip.
